“Are you okay, Nur?”
It was Uki. The crowd was quickly thinning out as everyone recovered from the
emotional and exhausting work of rebirthing elves. Nur staggered around the
circle, dazed, and she walked up behind him, her voice low and musical and
– he could hear it – amused. Nur spun around and almost lost his balance, but
he recovered and grinned at her, drunk out of his skull on elf pheromones.
“I’m fine, Uki, just a bit unsteady.” He waved to the churned-up field, now a
muddy mess. “I think I’m still – Anyway, why weren’t you out here! It was great!”
Uki’s eyes twinkled, but she didn’t get any closer to Nur. “I don’t need to be the
first thing an elf sees when he wakes from a 3,500-year nap. I’ll scare him.”
“You’re not scary, Uki. You’re beautiful, especially when you smile.” And he
lurched off, reeling over the uneven ground and just when he was about to
fall, a Warrior Elf ported in to help the lord to the tent. When Nur looked back,
Uki was gone, and he turned to the Warrior Elf, puzzled. “I don’t understand
why you guys are so afraid of her. She looks like a doll.”
The elf shrugged, “We’re not afraid of Lord Uki; we’re afraid of what she can do.
We didn’t know if she was going to be a good lord or a nasty one, but she
turned out to be a good one. She’s very disciplined.” Nur was sobering up and
he looked at the Warrior Elf, about to ask the next question, What can she do?,
but he was pushed into a folding chair, and the man disappeared in a shower of sparks.
